![]() ![]() The one area where the Nexus 5X is weaker is battery life. It didn’t even get warm while playing Shooting Stars for 30 minutes. In fact, I’d say that only hardcore gamers will even notice that it’s not the fastest processor on the block and only has 2GB of RAM when competitors have three or four. The phone feels snappy, switching apps is rapid, and while it’s not quite the fastest-feeling Android smartphone currently available – that would be the Galaxy S6 – it is on par with the best of the rest. It’s the same processor that LG used in the G4 to great effect. The Nexus 5X uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 808 hexa-core processor, not the company’s top of the line octa-core 810. The smartphone is responsive, feature-rich, but battery life could be better. Connectivity: LTE, Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth 4.2, USB-C and GPS.Camera: 12.3MP rear camera, 5MP front-facing camera.Operating system: Android 6.0 Marshmallow.Processor: hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808.The Galaxy S6’s 5.1in 2K display with 577ppi is technically sharper, but it is very difficult to spot the difference at that size of screen. It has a 1080p resolution, a density of 423 pixels per inch and is pin sharp. The buttons on the side feel a little basic and cheap, but the rest of the phone feels very well built. It doesn’t feel quite as premium as the iPhone or Galaxy S6, but its plastic is high quality, warm to the touch and a lot easier to hold onto. The iPhone 6S is 7.1mm thick and weighs 143g. The 6.8mm thick Samsung Galaxy S6, for instance, weighs 138g. It is 7.9mm thick, covered in a smooth soft-touch plastic, and weighs 136g, making it one of the lightest top-end smartphones currently available. The top and bottom speakers do not work as a stereo pair, unfortunately. It’s still a relatively compact smartphone, but now has a 5.2in screen and a longer body than the Nexus 5, which lets it fit in a front-facing speaker at the bottom. I don't find the hues to be overly saturated, though some people may find this to look washed out.The 2013 Nexus 5 on the left, the new Nexus 5X on the right. ![]() The screen size isn't as big as the 6-inch Nexus 6, but the color is more accurate. The 5.7-inch display of the Nexus 6P is a better fit for watching HD movies in a 16:9 aspect ratio when compared to the old Nexus 5. It's a shame, because Google has a fantastic keyboard by default, with finger swiping enabled on the frontend and a smarter autocorrect system in the backend. My messages go to the original messenger and no one else. Group messaging with a number of iPhone users is also a problem (this one problem isn't necessarily Google's fault). It's better, but can't really top Apple's iMessages way of doing things.Īs I explained in my Nexus 5X review, text messages are isolated on my Nexus 6P when using the Messenger app, and Hangouts confuses people by integrating my work email or my Google Voice number. Google, of course, still packs in Hangouts, which was redesigned over the summer for both iOS and then Android. It does, however, offer a clean and simple SMS app called Messenger (different from Facebook's identically named Messenger app). Nothing ties them together, and the Nexus 6P software doesn't fix this. I've never been a big fan of messaging on Android, because so many of my contacts use different apps. I haven't witnessed any battery improvements thanks to the improved Doze mode, but again the software is yet to be optimised so hopefully it will be more noticeable come the find build in a few weeks. Some apps don't work just yet, so be prepared to want to revert back to Android Marshmallow if you'll miss them too much. It's in beta and work perfectly, as smooth and as feature packed as has been running on my 6P. Of course, this is still an unfinished build of Android Nougat. There's a handy recently used apps row at the very top to take away some of the pain. Prepare your brain, since it now has you scroll up and down (no longer left to right). The last thing I'll touch on before getting into specific apps is the all-encompassing app drawer. The Google Play Store acts as your portal to downloading everything else, from Facebook and Instagram to LastPass and Pandora. ![]() Inside is Play Music, Play Movies & TV and Play Games. Pinned to the home screen are Google's camera, SMS Messenger and Play multimedia apps in a folder. It's filled with your favorite Google apps out-of-the-box instead: Gmail, Google Maps, Contacts, Drive, Calendar, Photos, Hangouts, YouTube, Photos and so on. ![]()
